Investment Grade

Prized at auction in Hong Kong

Dried abalone is graded the traditional way — by head count, the number of pieces to a catty. The fewer the heads, the larger and more prized each abalone.

Abagold's dried abalone has set the benchmark at auction. At our first 25K Investment Grade Abalone Auction, held in Hong Kong in June 2023, all 24 hand-selected lots sold — and Lot 9, “Zwelihle”, 25 catties of 25-year-old dried abalone, fetched over HK$70,000: the highest documented price on record for dried abalone of that age and quantity.

Presented in a format designed to appreciate in value as the abalone matures, our dried abalone continues a tradition prized at weddings, banquets and celebrations.

Abalone, in Harmony with Nature

Abagold's origins date back to 1984, when the late Pierre Hugo began experimental work on abalone breeding in Hermanus. In 1992, Abagold was formally established as South Africa's first commercial abalone farm.

Today, more than 40 years later, we cultivate abalone in close harmony with nature at the southernmost tip of Africa — and supply live abalone and a range of abalone products to international markets.
